What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to repair droopy eyelids caused by aging. The surgery encompasses the removal of excess skin, muscle and fat, which can lead to under-eye bags, make the eyes appear puffy and interfere with peripheral vision. Besides improving the aesthetics of the eye, blepharoplasty may also be necessary to improve vision when droopy or sagging eyelids prevent the eyes from opening completely or pull down the lower eyelids.

What to Expect from a Blepharoplasty Procedure

At Eye Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons of Central New York, we offer blepharoplasty in a comfortable outpatient setting. Depending on the type of blepharoplasty, the procedure may vary. In upper eyelid surgeries, your experienced surgeon will make an incision along the fold of the eyelid and remove any excess skin, muscle and fat before closing the cut. During a lower blepharoplasty procedure, the surgeon will make a cut inside the lower lid, remove or redistribute fat, muscle and sagging skin and stitch the incision shut.

Following your blepharoplasty, you’ll be able to go home that day. It’s normal to temporarily experience blurred vision, watering eyes, light sensitivity, puffy eyelids, swelling, bruising, pain and/or discomfort. In most cases, patients will feel comfortable getting back to their daily activities after 10 to 14 days.
